WHY EVALUATE NEW TB DIAGNOSTIC TESTS?
THE INFECTION CONTINUUM
The TB bacteria causes infection along an infection continuum.
TB can progress or be controlled along the infection continuum.
This means that it can be detected much earlier, even before it reaches its active state. If it can be detected, then it can be prevented.
There are a number of advantages to preventing TB or treating TB in a latent state (as opposed to treating active TB).
While ERASE – TB seeks to prevent TB, this cannot be done unless TB is diagnosed in its early states.
The problem is that the majority of current diagnostic tests are not very specific, sensitive or accurate when detecting TB in the early stages of the infectious continuum. In order to prevent TB in its early stages, newer, better, more accurate diagnostic tests are required, that can better identify TB, whether it be in its latent, incipient or subclinical states.
Hence, ERASE-TB seeks to evaluate and enhance new diagnostic methods for this very purpose.
